Redskins spending the big bucks

March 3rd, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

The Washington Redskins have made a blockbuster move; by purchasing all pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, formally of the Tennessee Titans. Within the first few hours of being a free agent, six teams dropped their deals like candy, but it was the ‘Skins offer he couldn’t refuse.

The agreement reached was a seven year contract for $100 million, which includes $41 million in guarantees. Also, within the first 13 months of the contract, he will receive around $32 million. Honestly, that is just too much to let down. This is one of the richest deals in NFL history.

Apparently, out of the six teams, Haynesworth and his agent, Chad Speck, had to choose between the Redskins or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Although, the Buccaneers have more capital, the Redskins were more aggressive in wanting to sign him, which might have been a huge factor in his decision making.

The ‘Skins not just only signed Haynesworth, they also added cornerback DeAngelo Hall, formally of the Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons, back to their roster. His deal is for six years at the price of $54 million. The Redskins have a reputation of making massive money signings, especially their owner Dan Snyder. Last year they didn’t make any free agent purchases, which might have led them to not have a great NFL season.

In the end, this might actually work for them. Bettering the roster with key players is always important for any team. Even though the Redskins haven’t had a great NFL season for quite some time, this could be their chance to shine. They have won the Super Bowl before and they can do it again. Take this team into great consideration for the next time you place your bets for this coming NFL season.

The 2009 NFL Draft

February 18th, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

April is the month when we can see new NFL football prospects rise or fall, when we can see if the rookies really have enough talent to play with the big dogs. It’s also a time to check out your favorite team’s roster, and quite possibly have better earnings. What does this mean?

This means it’s a time to check out your available NFL betting options and place a bet. These new players can really make a difference with the team of your preference. They can certainly give them a boost not just to the team, but also to your future bets.

NFL Drafts are always a good thing, because these new players can freshen up the current roster in different aspects, such as speed, agility and experience. This wouldn’t be bad for teams like the Detroit Lions (who just had one of the worse NFL seasons), the St. Louis Rams or the Kansas City Chiefs. These are teams that really need to improve their gaming strategy… they really need it.

Currently, the scouting is reaching an end and it’s time for these teams to make a choice. The first ones to pick are obviously going to choose the ones with the better scores, such as Michael Crabtree or Aaron Curry. These are players with a lot of future ahead of them.

For now, be informed of what’s going on with the 2009 NFL Draft, in every possible way. This could help you make a better decision when the NFL season begins in the fall and also help you make greater football bets with your NFL team of choice.

Better roster for the Eagles

February 13th, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

Although they had a good NFL season and were so close to get to the Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles still think they could do better and reach that goal. The Eagles quarterback, Donovan McNabb, and other members of the team had a meeting in which they discussed about contract extension.

The quarterback gathered with the Eagles coach Andy Reid, and Eagles president Joe Banner, at the Eagles complex in Philadelphia, where they not only talked about prolonging the contract, but also increasing the roster with solid players, specifically on the offensive side.

The possibility of McNabb staying with the team is in a critical state. According to McNabb, this upgrade to the team can improve their chances to reach championship gold. But, if there is no improvement whatsoever, he might consider not renewing his contract, which ends in two years, or even ask the Eagles to trade him.

The option of free agents is not that great, specifically because there aren’t many players out there. Veterans such as Jon Runyan and Tra Thomas are becoming free agents this coming Friday. Others such as T.J. Houshmandzadeh would likely be traded if they have a guarantee that McNabb is still going to be with Eagles.

Last season, McNabb passed for 3,916 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. This was the fifth time he lead the Eagles to the conference title game. Later on in the season, he was benched against the Baltimore Ravens. Their final game was against the Arizona Cardinals, where they lost the NFC Championship game.

Brett Favre retires – Will this be finally true?

February 12th, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

After several NFL offseason episodes every year, Brett Favre announces his retirement from Pro Football. But this time he swears it’s true. Seriously. No, really!

With 18 NFL Seasons played and 39 years old, Favre says the retirement is for good and there will be no more “surprise” comebacks. He stated that his time to leave has come, and he wants to put an end to his very successful NFL career. He just played one season with the New York Jets, and although he’s thankful for that opportunity, he said “I wish I could’ve played better down the stretch”. Brett Favre is starting to learn his limitations and, wisely, retires while he’s still in the spotlight as one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.

Even though most of the football betting fans won’t believe this unless the 2009 NFL Season actually begins without him, everything points towards this as a true fact: His retirement paperwork has finally been filed in the NFL. This time we didn’t have all those tears and loud goodbyes (probably because Favre knows he’d look like a complete fool if he goes through all that drama for the second time to take it back a few weeks later). Just the certainty from the Jets QB about the definitive retirement.

So this means the Jets are probably losing their star after one season showing off the skills of Brett Favre. It’s likely that many football fans decide not to bet on the ‘Favre-less’ NY Jets. Do you think this will affect the team’s chances of getting to the next Super Bowl? Only time will tell… if the word ‘retirement’ does mean quitting Football this time for Favre.

Michael Vick might lose another year

February 10th, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

The Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback, Michael Vick, might not be able to play this year’s NFL season, until he faces the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Despite the fact that he will be released this July after completing a 23 month sentence, chances are that he still won’t play on the field after lying to Goodell two years ago about the dog fighting incident.

Many people think that Goodell is still going to keep him suspended mainly because Vick, basically, mocked him and took it as a joke when he was asked about his actions. Some people think the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) is not doing its job and handed full responsibility towards the commissioner just to avoid a problem, demonstrating not much care for the interest of players.

Another issue is that the Falcons’ don’t want Vick anymore and the possibility of trading him to another team is most likely to happen. Many teams in the league are not interested in his services, but teams like the San Francisco 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings have their eye on Vick, but still are not sure what they will do. 49ers coach Mike Singletary said that Vick deserves another chance and that he will have a successful return.

The future of Vick is still uncertain. Whether he might play this season or not, if the Falcons are going to still keep him or eliminate his contract, the possibility of going to the CFL or if another team is going to sign him to their roster. The chances are very low. But whatever option comes up in the next few months, this could Vicks’ recovery and we might see a different and better Michael Vick the next time he touches the field.

Super Bowl commercials 2009

February 6th, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

There is always another reason why people watch the superbowl: the excitement, the teams, the fun of having friends and family over to watch the football game and of courses the commercials.

This year’s super bowl commercials were sold for over $3 million a spot and of course they are magnificent examples of product advertisement every year, 2009 was no exception. From the fun and cute careerbuilders.com punched koala to pop culture icon from SNL MacGruber being endorsed by Pepsi, 2009 super bowl ads were very well finished and detailed works of art.

The imaginative Doritos commercial was definitely one of my favorites but the Bud Light commercial where people drink beer on meetings was terrible in my opinion and definitely not Super Bowl commercial material at all unlike Pedigree’s adoption campaign ad that proved to be well thought out and clever.

There were some super bowl commercials that showed that companies cut out expenses in making the ad probably to be able to pay for the spot, yet we still had some interesting pieces to enjoy after all, the Frosted Flakes ad not only had a lovely message also added a bit of humanity to the entire event, my wife loved it.

Probably the financial crisis is to be blamed for not allowing companies to spend more in advertisement quality, hopefully next year we can enjoy cleverer and sophisticated pieces of advertisement during the super bowl, who know, maybe a minimalist way of marketing can deliver more interesting commercials during the next super bowl.

Matt Cassel, Patriot’s miracle man

February 4th, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

The Patriots are without a question, a team that deserves all the possible honors a team can obtain – ok, ok, that is if we put the Bill Beli-cheat deal out of the table – and let me tell you, I just don’t believe they are only good, they are very lucky too.

Why? Well, the reason has a name, and that is Matt Cassel, what an amazing quarterback the rookie is! And to think that nobody believed in him when the NFL season started, I guess that is just the way things are in American football and sports in general, a player must prove himself in front of a big crowd in despite of obtaining an starting position. And believe me; I am sure Patriots fans are happy with Cassel’s performance on the football field.

Tom Brady is a man that deserves a spot in the hall of fame and we all know that, but before he got injured, Matt Cassel was just a shadow behind him, and I’m sure New England Patriots fans were expecting Brady to be injury-proof all of his career so they didn’t had to see what a rookie like Cassel could do or not.

Why the fear about Matt Cassel? Well, because he never was a steady starting quarterback before and his experience in regular NFL season games was quite poor.

But wait! Something great happen – at least for CasselTom Brady got injured in the first game of the regular season! And here comes the chance for the rookie to show people what he’s made of.

Of course we all know what happened afterwards, Matt Cassel does an outstanding job, leading to the Patriots to an excellent regular season record during his first year as the official starting quarterback for the team. Sure, he didn’t lead the Pats to the Super Bowl, but who knows, maybe next year…

Super Bowl XLIII – The glory goes to the Steelers

February 3rd, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

This 2008-2009 NFL Football Season was full of action and full of surprises. The final event had to go according to the intensity of the season, of course. The NFL Season ended with Super Bowl XLIII as one of the most exciting games ever played and the most watched ever.

With a breath-taking match, the Pittsburgh Steelers became the NFL Champions after defeating (by little) an impressive Arizona Cardinals team. The game had it all to make history and make every NFL betting fan flip out no matter which their favorite NFL team was.

Even though the biggest favorites of the day were the Steelers, Arizona showed to the world what the team was made of and why they deserved to be there. The Cardinals entered the finals unexpectedly, and that caused many people not trusting them to have a good performance. Ready to prove them all wrong, the Arizona Cardinals became one of the best Super Bowl rivals of all times. Minutes before the end of the 4th quarter, the Cardinals were up on the NFL Score. By that time, everybody really thought the Arizona Cardinals would be Super Bowl Champions for the first time. However, one last touchdown by MVP Santonio Holmes gave the Steelers the chance to place themselves as the top NFL team, with a record of Super Bowl victories.

Super Bowl XLIII will also be remembered for a new record set by Steelers James Harrison, with an interception return of the whole 100 yards to a touchdown. The 100-yard interception return set a new record as the longest play in NFL history.

Even those who weren’t fans of any of these 2 teams enjoyed this Super Bowl. Few times in life you have the chance to see a real face-to-face between 2 good teams and get really surprised by them.

Cardinals preview for the Superbowl

January 26th, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

Who would have thought that the Cardinals were going to be one of the two teams to be present at this year’s Superbowl? I guess not many people, but Arizona enjoys being an underdog (at least in what it concerns to betting), and even though I believe the Steelers have the most chances of winning the game, football is football, and if the Cardinals made it that far,  is because they also have the potential of going against the grain.

The hopes of Arizona Cardinals are set on their quarterback, Kurt Warner, a player who has been a headache for rival teams this year. The Cardinals have a strong offensive that has been consistent, and the reason why Arizona has looked bad in a few games is because of many sacks on Warner and turnovers by the Cardinals.

But even though they have a good offense, the Cardinals have a good reason to worry: they will play the most important game in pro football against the Steelers, possibly the team with the best defense in the league.

The Cardinals’ luck will be depending on stopping Willie Parker. The good thing is that they have a whole week before the Superbowl to get their defense ready. They know they cannot allow the Steelers to score more than 21 points or they will be lost (this is a huge task considering that the Cardinals allowed 21 points in the second half of their recent game against the Eagles).

Their strategy might be based on scoring a good number of points and on trying to secure the win in the fourth quarter.

Right now the betting houses have the Steelers as favorites at -7, but if you are to bet this game, I will recommend you to wait until game day to place your bet in order to see what happens this week concerning injuries and others.

Pacman Jones dismissed from the Cowboys

January 19th, 2009 - by Sports Bookie

I guess we all saw it coming… Pacman Jones has finally been released from his duties with the Cowboys.

The reason of the firing is new allegations against the troubled Pacman stating that he arranged for the shooting of 3 men from Atlanta just two months after he was suspended from the Titans by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in 2007. Apparently all started when Jones hold a dispute with one of the 3 men, such information came from an Atlanta police informant.

During his tenure with the Titans, Jones got involved in six incidents with the police leading to the same number of arrests.

The Cowboys hired Adam Jones before the current NFL season started in despite of the recent suspension. He was expected to give Dallas a boost in defense, and finished with no interceptions and an average of 4.6 yards per punt return.

Jones already had a bad episode during his time with the Cowboys, as he was suspended for six games due to a violation to the team’s player conduct policy product of fight between him and a team bodyguard.

The Cowboys didn’t have a strong reason to dismiss Pacman Jones, the only possible one is the team image and how Jones can blur the good work owner Jerry Jones is doing.

Worrick Robinson, Pacman’s agent said that he expects Jones to be back with an NFL team for the coming NFL season. “He is young. He has a lot of ability and he is eager to get back on the field” he said.

Pacman Jones is currently attending a rehabilitation program to leave alcohol and is currently planning to remain in the Dallas area in order to workout at old time friend and former NFL cornerback Deion Sanders’s Prime U camp.
